In the story of Your Lie In April, colors are incredibly important to the story, each character has powerful emotional reactions to their music, and we as the readers see this represented as colors. At this music competition these characters are regarded as the top of their game, declining, and absentee, Kaori has something to hide, Emi has been falling, and Kosei has been absent for 2 years. Each of these cheaters while seeming different each of these characters share one thing, emotion through music. Us as the reader and a 3rd person character and we see this emotion as color, ranging from the red of anger to the golden of joy.
When Kaori is playing, she is unbound, free, completely unlike anything this sobered crowd has seen before. The entire hall is astounded and filled with color, the colors of her Freedom and melancholy. this appears because of Kaori's secrets, revealed to us by when we see her with the pills at the previous concert and because of her joy from playing freely.
When Emi plays we see an encroaching we of red interlaced with stream of yellow, this shows the encroaching aspect of her emotions, how they overpower and control her compared to the other characters just having these feelings. Emi's colors, red and yellow represent her anger and her loneliness, the red is covering everything, as if it makes up her everything while the yellow seem created by it, as if her anger is pushing everyone else away.
When Kosei plays for the first time we see him surrounded by the black sea, this is a metaphorical representation of his despair and failure, but after his resolution with Kaori he is shown with golden bubbles of joy. this shows how he is changed, the vibrant gold is practically an opposite to the somber black, showing gah e comparison between the previous performance and now
